A Quick History of Marietta
Marietta is one of metro Atlanta's oldest cities. The town was laid out in 1833 and recognized by the Georgia legislature in 1834, and it grew up around the courthouse square that is still the heart of the city today. The Western and Atlantic Railroad made Marietta a busy stop in the 1840s and 1850s, and the Civil War left its mark here, from the 1862 Great Locomotive Chase, whose raiders spent the night in Marietta, to the 1864 Union occupation. Today the Square is lined with restaurants, shops, theaters and museums, and it's one of the most popular places in Cobb County for a night out, a prom photo or a wedding.
