Town green and fountain in Smyrna, GA

A Quick History of Smyrna

Smyrna grew up around a church campground founded in 1832, where families from across the area gathered to worship. When the Western and Atlantic Railroad came through between 1836 and 1842, the stop was known as Ruff's Siding and then Varner's Station before the community took the name Smyrna. The State of Georgia incorporated the city in 1872. Smyrna is known as the Jonquil City, after the Taylor family brought jonquils to the area, and today its Market Village and Village Green make up a walkable downtown just minutes from Truist Park and The Battery Atlanta.
